Measi over at Measi's Musings hosts this fun SAL...stitch like it's the end of the world!
This month's question is "If you have any of your pieces on display in your home, which attracts the most plaudits?"
Honestly? I have my Viking Head on the wall, but no one has noticed. When I had my Halloween stuff hanging all over the livingroom, no one said a word. It is largely unnoticed and generally people don't care. This does sound horrible doesn't it? It's not. It's just proof as to who really should be in my house! HA, HA!
Of course, there is the dilemma for the person who may or may not understand that what they are looking at is actual cross stitch. I'm sure we have all experienced that awkward moment.
Last year when I gave Vinnie Stretch to my Co-worker and our manager came over and "loved the beads!" when, in fact, there wasn't one bead present...it's an illusion they can't quite figure out, ha, ha. Or my ABSOLUTE favorite! The person thinks your hours and days and weeks of stitching is STORE BOUGHT, factory produced stuff. They have a difficult time understanding that this was made by hand. I don't know whether to be offended or laugh at their ignorance. I tell them it's okay they didn't know, but now I ask myself...was (or is) it really okay?
I guess my truest answer to this month's question is: none. No plaudits. If I wasn't such a hard core berserking stitcher, I might not even do it anymore...GASP!!! Well that is a lie...we all know I would still stitch LIKE IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD...it's how I roll.
Until next time.....KEEP ON STITCHIN'!
Well I love your pieces lol. My hubby doesn't say anything about mine but my mom likes it and so does my cousin who I'm stitching paradise for.
ReplyDeleteI love hearing about how people LOVE the stitching...my brother is a huge supporter but he doesn't come here since he lives on an island he rarely leaves :D
DeleteIt is sad that no one notices. Whenever I visit anyone's house, my eyes always go to what is on display especially the stuff that is clearly embroidered. I went to my guild president's house and my eyes didn't know where to look lol there was so many things she has on display.
ReplyDeleteExactly! My current house had this clock in a curio cabinet that I loved as it was cross stitched and I loved it...the owner gifted it to me to "go with the house"!
DeleteYas! I agree with you here. In my current house, where I live with family, we have tons of artwork/stitching things around the house and I don't think many people realize that the hangings in frames have been stitched. They probably assume it's part of the paintings around the house. I've had one person once say "wait? this isn't a painting". When they found out it was cross stitched they were impressed. I think for "norms", haha *snort*, they don't think it's a stitchery. For all of us in the "Stitchers for Life" club we sure do notice. I know when I see anything stitched I ask about or I can just tell.
ReplyDeleteAnd for the love of all the bunnies, I definitely laugh when they think it's something store bought. It's a compliment in my opinion. You just have to slather on a haughty I-made-it-myself-are-you-impressed statement. Don't forget to turn that nose up, keep the tone posh, and throw in some light-hearted darlings in there too. HAHA. Joking here, of course. Slightly hyper on coffee. Great to see a WIP!
ahahah! YES!!! The hilarious incident about "the beads" DID make me laugh and I really would have liked to have caught that moment on camera! It's funny how people get quilts or knitted scarves (oh yeah, still thinking that is store bought) but the cross stitch is beyond comprehension hahahaha!
Deleteaaaaw, poor you! I'm going to come round your house and admire everything LOL.
ReplyDeleteI do think only other crafters really appreciate the work gone into making something. Even if they do a different craft it's still handmade.
Oh yes! come over as often as you like! Cross Stitched items are better viewed in person :D I agree, crafty persons DO appreciate a skilled finished project more so than the average person :D
DeleteI must come visit to give your work extra love.
ReplyDeleteI laugh here because as much as I wanted you all at my house we just never made it here! Next time you will stay IN my house, dig through my stash, and I promise to get you to the boat and/or plane timely....even though ten minutes was awesome!
DeleteI agree, we ALL need to visit your house and give that stitching the appropriate love!
ReplyDeleteI also agree that 'looks like store bought' is mostly a compliment - it means your stitches are really smooth and regular and now visible mistakes are present. Also, it means the other person doesn't have the first idea about crafting, but that's a different story and shouldn't concern you ^.~
I'm glad so many of you think it's a compliment. I was never sure! So, yes, come to my house and dig through my stash and we can stitch and watch big screen TV!
DeleteWhen I lived in Texas, no one noticed anything on the walls either, and to be fair, it's only visiting crafters who give my work any notice.
ReplyDeleteI'm "known" for having unconventional stuff on the wall - I have antique photos, original paintings, gyotaku, wine labels, butterflies (from SO's father, who is an entomologist) - so people *tend* to check out what's on my walls out of curiosity, knowing it's not another Monet print, but they still gravitate to the "weirder" things, rather than the stitching I spent so much time on. C'est la vie - I stitch for me, not for other people. And the issue with people thinking it's factory made is why I rarely gift anything.
Your WIP is looking good! I look forward to seeing more progress :)
Gosh, will ALL of that on your walls I would HAVE to look at EVERYTHING...but I would linger in front of the stitched pieces much longer than lovely butterflies and wine labels...even though I am equally fascinated by both :D
DeleteGreat progress and it's fantastic that your work gets appreciated!
ReplyDeleteNow that I'm done with all my little things, I can get back to my WIP and really get it done! Thank you so much for sharing your love :D
DeleteGreat progress! I too have experienced "oh, I thought it was a painting". I don't take it personally. I stitch for myself and loved ones who know what they're looking at.
ReplyDeleteThat is a good way to view it since I basically DO stitch for myself...or rather my sanity ha ha!
DeleteHi Carla, so lovely WIP! Including me, many stitchers had the same worries as you I think. My work has become like a part of the wall now, ha-ha! Happy stitching!
ReplyDeletehaha! Thank you! At least YOU can admire what you've done :D
