January TUSAL

For a Totally Useless SAL, it sure is a fun one!

The giant bag on the left is where I empty my ORT jar every month.  There are pieces of yarn, mercerized cotton, tiny bits of cotton fabric, tons of bits and pieces of floss.  I believe this is 1.5 years worth of ORTs.  Plenty to stuff the biscornus I will be making soon.

For you first time or new readers, I recycle my ORTs.  For years I wondered what on earth I could do to not "waste" the floss bits, and one day Zeus strolled by and flicked my forehead and said, "Seriously?  Recycle!"

Thanks Zeus!

Now they go into the homemade ORT jar and then the bag and then inside of a biscornu.  It really makes the biscornu softer and boy can I stuff some ORTs into that biscornu!  You should try it sometime.

Now I must get something done on Day 1 so I can have four out of five finished on my list of January goals.  10 days left in the month and I'm feeling pretty good about what I've done so far!

Until next time...

  1. You have done really well this month with your list of 5! Your ORT jar is showing signs of all you did stitching wise, and the ripping too by the looks of things - I hope the coming month brings less ripping and more stitching :)

    1. I agree and thank you for the love! I too was floored by the amount of floss in that jar for this month, YOURS are always so much fuller!

  2. I didn't realize until now just how big your jar is...you did so much stitching this month, and it looks like so little floss in there!

I'm looking forward to seeing your work on day one...what was the last point on your list again? I can't seem to remember...

    1. It's a Sapphire Gin bottle that I cut the top off of so it is pretty huge for an ORT jar :D I have another bottle I'm making one for Magical.

The list of 5 is as follows:

      1) Monthly bookmark
      2) 12 Days of Christmas
      3) A tiny
      4) Current Project Skeleton Crew
      5) Another tiny or small or mini or three when I can't stand to stitch my project anymore.

I have done 1, 3, and 5 and worked on 4 and hopefully this week I finish Day 1!

  3. 1. I told someone else I was jealous of their ORT jar. I take that back, I'm jealous of yours. I need to drink faster to use a cool container.

    2. BISCORNUS! You, madam, are a genius, and I will be recycling as well (I always hated throwing them away, and never thought of using them for stuffing). I'm thinking a yearly commemorative biscornu is now going to be a *thing* for me.

    1. HA! The gin was quite delicious and after I made this ORT jar, my GF Magical wanted one too so back to drinking more gin!

I'm really glad you like the recycling idea, orts really do make great stuffing and now NOTHING goes to waste. I love your yearly commemorative biscornu idea! I will be watching for that :D

    2. I may or may not have been digging through the liquor cabinet looking to see how pretty my bottles are. I can't drink gin (I have a bad reaction), but I love that bottle (even if it's just to use as a vase!). I could probably snake an empty from a friend, though ;)

    3. Oh yes! Get the word out for an "interesting" bottle and the next thing you know you will have more than you know what to do with! I did that and have to say, luckily I did have all of those bottles. When cutting and removing the tops, sometimes cracking and breaking happens :(

    1. Thank you! It really does work out nicely and after I had done it on the first one I was so impressed at how well the shape came out using ORTs I don't think any other stuffing will match up!

  5. I wish I had to empty my jar every month. It would be a sad little bag of ORTs if I did. Lol. I may borrow your idea for using the ORTs from last year to stuff a biscornu. I've been on a mission to find one to stitch for myself. :-)

    1. I don't have to empty my jar every month, I used to just wait until the jar or bowl was full and then do something with it, but since I like a fresh start after every TUSAL I empty :D There are free patterns for biscornu all over the place, so I wish you luck and happy hunting on finding that perfect one for yourself!

  6. You are off to a great start - great idea for an ORT jar by the way. And I love the idea of using them for stuffing - would work much better than the cotton stuffing I would think.

    1. Thank you and it does! The first time I used my ORTs for stuffing I was so surprised at how soft my biscornu was and it had a perfect shape which is harder to get using that "other stuff". I do highly recommend it :)

  7. Zeus has the best ideas. And so does Suz with her yearly biscornu, cause you know me, any excuse to do a one.
